Girls drop low scoring game

Norv and Mary Coblentz · Wednesday, January 25, 2017
The West Liberty girls' basketball team suffered a 50-29 loss at Durant Jan. 17.

"We started with a triangle and two," West Liberty Head Coach Jeff Morris said. "Actually, we did a pretty good job of keeping them from scoring. We just couldn't hit any baskets. Pretty much every game we're down. When you get down (by a lot) that quickly, it's hard to recover. The girls competed. They played hard like they do pretty much every game. We're going to have to keep working."

Although the Comets held the Wildcats to just nine points in the first quarter, the Comets scored only two points.

There was no score in the game until the 4:47 mark in the first quarter when Durant made a basket. At the 2:38 mark, Cora Wickham made a basket for a 7-2 score. Durant made another basket before the quarter ended.

The Comets scored six points to the Wildcats' 17 in the second quarter. Haddie Anderson made a basket at the 4:45 mark for a 19-4 score. Madison McIntosh made the next West Liberty basket for a 23-6 score at the 1:55 mark.

Miranda McHugh made a basket, drew a foul, and made the free throw with 1:08 to go in the half. The Comets had a lane violation, so the free throw didn't count. Halftime score was 26-8, Durant.

Anderson made two baskets in the third quarter, both in the last minute and a half.

In the fourth quarter, Anderson started the West Liberty scoring at the 7:20 mark. Austyn Crees made a three-point basket at the 6:50 mark for a 41-17 score.

Anderson got a steal and layup then made another basket. Haylee Lehman made a basket. Wickham was fouled and made two free throws.

Brittney Harned made 2-2 from the free throw line. Anderson got a steal and layup. Crees was fouled and made one of two free throws for a 50-29 final score.

"A lot of it was just the tempo tonight," Durant Head Coach Doug Frett said. "I wanted to push the tempo. We tried to keep Haddie (Anderson) away from the ball, but she was still good getting to the basket, although her shots weren't falling either."

The Comets' record is 0-17 on the season.
