Comets let Tigers slip away

All five West Liberty starters scored in double figures in the Comets' Jan. 13 game at Tipton, but still the Comets fell to the Tigers 70-64.

"We had a four-point lead with about two minutes to go in the third quarter," West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. "We let that slip, let them go on an 8-0 run. That was probably the differentce in the ballgame. We couldn't claw our way back after that."

First Half

Tipton scored first, then Seth Feldman tied the game at 2-2 with a drive to the hoop. After a Tipton foul, S. Feldman scored a three-pointer, assist Notoah Feldman, for a 5-2 West Liberty lead.

Tipton tied the score with a three-point basket. The Comets turned the ball over, but Nathan Schemmel got a defensive rebound. Spencer Daufeldt was fouled on a shot and made both free throws.

Tipton got a putback basket for a 7-7 tie. Tipton got a steal, but Tanner Iske stole the ball back. Daufeldt scored. N. Feldman got a defensive rebound, then Schemmel scored, assist Daufeldt, for an 11-7 West Liberty lead.

Tipton drew a foul on a shot and made the second of two free throws. West Liberty turned the ball over on a pass, and Tipton scored in the paint for an 11-10 score.

A three-point basket by S. Feldman, assist N. Feldman, gave the Comets a 14-10 lead. Tipton turned the ball over. N. Feldman scored, assist S. Feldman, and the Comets had a 16-10 lead.

Tipton made a three-point basket, S. Feldman scored a three-pointer, assist N. Feldman for a 19-13 score. A three-point basket by the Tigers at the buzzer made the score 19-16.

The Tigers scored right away in the second quarter, cutting the Comets lead to one point. Iske was fouled and made the first of two free throws.

Tipton got the rebound and scored for a 20-20 tie. Tipton made two free throws, a lane violation took a free throw from the Comets, and Tipton made a three-point basket for a 25-20 Tigers lead.

Schemmel drove the basket and scored, then Tipton made another three-point basket. Leo Lopez scored, assist Iske. Tipton scored, then Elias Rocha scored, assist N. Feldman. Another basket by Tipton made their lead 32-26.

The Comets missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Tipton got the rebound. Tipton fouled, and Iske made the second of two free throws.

Iske got a defensive rebound, and was fouled on a shot at the buzzer. He made both free throws for a halftime score of 32-29.

Second Half

It was West Liberty ball to start the second half, but the Comets turned the ball over. Daufeldt got a defensive rebound, then Iske scored, assist N. Feldman for a 32-31 score.

Tipton made a basket, then N. Feldman drove to the hoop and scored. N. Feldman got a defensive rebound, then Daufeldt scored inside for a 35-34 West Liberty lead with about five minutes left in the quarter.

Tipton took the lead back with a three-point basket, then Schemmel made a three-pointer for a 38-37 Comets lead. S. Feldman got a steal, and Schemmel hit another three-pointer, assist N. Feldman, for a 41-37 lead.

It was all Tipton the rest of the quarter. The Tigers scored four baskets to take a 45-41 lead into the last quarter.

Tipton scored first in the fourth quarter, then Daufeldt completed a traditional three-point play for a 4-44 Tipton lead.

Tipton made two free throws, got a steal and a basket then made two more free throws. Another steal and layup made it 55-44, Tipton. Rocha made two free throws, then Daufeldt scored, assist N. Feldman.

Daufeldt was fouled but missed the free throw. N. Feldman got the rebound and a basket for 55-50 score.

Tipton scored, N. Feldman scored, assist S. Feldman, then Tipton made a three-point basket. S. Feldman scored, assist N. Feldman. Tipton made two free throws then a basket.

Tipton got a steal on an inbounds pass, but N. Feldman got a block, and the ball went to the Comets. S. Feldman made a basket for a 64-56 score.

Daufeldt took a charge, Tipton was fouled and made the first of two free throws. N. Feldman was fouled and made the second of two free throws.

Tipton made the first of two free throws for 66-57 score. The Comets missed a free throw, Tipton missed a free throw, then Iske made a three-point basket. With 21 seconds to go, Tipton made two free throws.

N. Feldman was fouled on a shot and made the first free throw. Tipton got the rebound then got fouled.

The Tigers made the first free throw and missed the second. N. Feldman got the rebound. A three-point basket by Iske was the final score of the game for a 70-64 final.

"We told our boys (West Liberty is) a good ball team," Tipton Head Coach Matt Fouch said. "They get to the basket. They've got some athletes.

"Our free throws have won us probably four or five games by now because we knock down free throws late.

"We tried to limit (Noah Feldman and Seth Feldman's) touches. Not let them each get 20 (points), because if they each get 20 points, they're going to win."

The Comets' record falls to 4-8 on the season.

The Comets lost on the road to the Washington Demons. Two Comets scored in double figures. Noah Feldman had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Tanner Iske scored 10 points. West Liberty took the lead in the first quarter, but three consecutive single-digit quarter scores led to the loss.
