Girls hang tough against Tipton

The West Liberty girls basketball team fell to the Tipton Tigers 74-41 at Tipton Jan. 13.

"I told the girls after the game I thought it was one of our better games," West Liberty Head Coach Jeff Morris said.

"We got a lot of good shots. We handled the press. I don't think their press bothered us too much. We just missed a lot of open shots early.

"Teams tend to get offensive rebounds against us, especially post players. I thought we did some good things. It's hard for them to see they're making improvements."

Tipton jumped out to a 20-10 lead in the first quarter, hitting two three-point baskets. West Liberty scored a basket each by Haylee Lehman, Cora Wickham, Haddie Anderson, and Madison McIntosh. Wickham also made two of two free throws.

First Half

Tipton scored first in the second quarter on one of two free throws when Lehman picked up her third personal foul. Anderson made a basket for a 21-12 score.

Tipton scored, stole the ball, and scored again. Austyn Crees drove to the hoop and scored for a 25-14 score.

The Tigers completed a traditional three-point play. Tipton got a defensive board, a basket, a steal, and another basket for a 32-14 lead. West Liberty was fouled on a shot and missed both free throws.

Crees got a defensive rebound, Miranda McHugh drew a foul and made the second of two free throws for a 32-15 score. Tipton made a three-point basket then a two-point basket for a 37-15 tally.

The Comets turned the ball over, but Anderson got a steal and made a three-pointer for a 37-18 score.

Tipton made a basket, West Liberty missed a free throw, Tipton made a three-point basket, the Comets turned the ball over, and Tipton scored again. At halftime, the Tigers had a 44-18 lead.

Second Half

Tipton continued to build their lead in the third quarter, scoring the first three baskets. Anderson scored back-to-back baskets, the second a three-pointer, for a 50-23 score.

Tipton was fouled and made two free throws. The Tigers got a steal, drew a foul, and made two more free throws. West Liberty turned the ball over, and Tipton scored.

After a defensive rebound, Tipton scored at the 2:22 mark for a 58-23 score. The continuous clock rule went into effect for a very fast rest of the game.

Anderson made a three-point basket, got a defensive rebound, and made another three-point basket for a 58-29 score. Tipton was fouled and made the second of two free throws for a 59-29 score to end the quarter.

The Tigers had possession to start the fourth quarter but turned the ball over. Wickham made a three-point basket.

Tipton scored, then Lehman made a three-point basket for a 61-35 score. Tipton made the next four baskets. Anderson scored, Tipton made a three-pointer.

Anderson drove to the hoop and scored. McIntosh got a rebound, and Anderson scored again. Tipton scored one more time for a final 74-41 score.

Anderson scored 24 points in the game, including four three-point baskets.

The Comets' record is 0-14

Haddie Anderson was the leading scorer for the Comets with 15 points. Cora Wickham was also in double figures with 10. Anderson led the Comets in rebounds with seven and in assists with three.

Senior Haddie Anderson scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds for a double-double. She also had two blocks, two steals and three assists.
