On Jan. 12, 2017 at 5:27 p.m., the West Liberty Police was dispatched to a train vs car accident with unknown injury in the 200 block N. Calhoun Street according to a police report.
West Liberty Police located a 2008 Nissan Altima on the south side of the tracks with an injured driver, the incident occurred at the railroad crossing near Calhoun and Spencer Street.
West Liberty Fire and Ambulance were advised of the location of the injured driver, and requested Air Care out of Iowa City.
The driver of the vehicle was extricated by West Liberty Fire and transported to the hospital by Air Care. There is no news on the condition of the driver.
The Nissan was traveling south when it crossed the railroad tracks in front of the eastbound Iowa Interstate Railroad train. The Nissan spun out of control and came to rest in the West Liberty Foods Trailer parking lot.
Having seen the vehicle the train operator put on the brakes, but was unable to come to a full stop before the collision.
Assisting the West Liberty Police Department was the West Liberty Fire and Ambulance, Muscatine County Sheriff's Deputies, Iowa State Patrol and Air Care.
This accident remains under investigation by West Liberty Police Department and Iowa State Patrol Accident Investigation team.
