The Comets were on fire, and Brett Becker's four three-point baskets in the first quarter helped bury the Tipton Tigers Jan. 9 at West Liberty. The Comets won 62-30.

Three Comets were in double figures: Becker scored 24 points, Kyle Miller 14 points and Troy Heick had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

"I thought we played well offensively," West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. "Brett Becker came out shooting the ball well, and it was contagious for us. I think this helped us with some energy on the defensive end and led to some steals with easy baskets on the other end. We gave up too many offensive rebounds; that is something we will need to continue to work on."

First Quarter

Heick's tip to start the game went to Miller. Becker hit his first three-pointer just eight seconds into the game for a 3-0 West Liberty lead.

The Tigers turned the ball over, and Becker scored on a turnaround jumper. The Tigers got two tries at a basket and then got fouled. They made both free throws for a 5-2 score.

Brady Smith scored in the paint, assist Miller. Heick got a steal, but the Comets turned the ball over. Each team got a defensive rebound, then the Tigers were fouled. They missed both free throws, and Heick got the rebound.

Miller was fouled on a shot. He made the second of two free throws. Tipton turned the ball over and Miller scored, assist Becker. Heick got a defensive rebound and Miller made a layup for a 12-2 West Liberty lead with 4:42 left in the first quarter.

Tipton took a time out. Anderson tipped the inbounds pass to Becker, but the Tigers got a defensive rebound. Tipton was fouled on a shot and made both free throws. Each team turned the ball over, then Heick scored in the paint.

Ryan Alpen picked up a loose ball, then the Tigers got a rebound. Heick got a block and Tipton was fouled on a shot. The Tigers made the first free throw and missed the second. Luke Seele got the rebound and Becker hit a three-point basket with 2:51 on the clock for a 17-5 lead.

Tipton turned the ball over then got a defensive rebound and three-point basket. Miller drove to the basket and drew a foul. He hit the first free throw and missed the second. Tipton got the rebound. After a West Liberty shot the ball went out of bounds off a Tipton player. Becker hit another trey with 1:30 to go in the quarter for a 21-8 lead.

Koenig saved a ball in to the Comets and Becker hit yet another three-pointer. The Tigers called a time out with 51.9 seconds on the clock, trailing 24-8. There was no additional score the rest of the quarter.

Second Quarter

Tipton had possession to start the second quarter, but they stepped on the line and turned the ball over. Miller drove to the basket and scored. Anderson got a steal and Smith scored on an outside shot for a 28-8 lead. Smith deflected a rebound to Becker and Heick was fouled on a shot with 7 minutes left in the half. He made the first rebound and Tipton got the rebound when he missed the second.

Heick got a defensive rebound, then Becker was fouled on a shot. He made the second free throw. Heick got another defensive board then a putback basket with 5:35 on the clock.

Tipton scored their first basket of the quarter at the 5:06 mark for a 32-10 score. Miller was fouled on a shot and made both free throws. Tipton was fouled on a shot and made the first of two free throws. Seele got the rebound, then Anderson drove to the basket and scored.

Becker got a defensive rebound and Anderson was fouled on a shot. He made the second of two free-throws. Koenig got a defensive rebound. The Comets were fouled but missed the front end of a one-and-one. Tipton got the rebound and scored a three-pointer with 3:15 left in the quarter.

Heick scored, assist Koenig. Koenig got a defensive rebound, but the Comets turned the ball over. Seele got a defensive rebound with two minutes left in the half. West Liberty knocked the ball out of bounds, then Tipton's shot hit the backboard. Alpen had the ball under the hoop and shot it out to Becker, who made a three-point shot with 46 seconds to go in the half. Tipton was fouled and missed the free throw. Seele got the rebound.

Heick scored the last basket of the half, assist Alpen, for a 44-14 West Liberty lead.

Third Quarter

West Liberty had possession to start the third quarter. Heick scored right away, assist Anderson. Miller scored next, assist Anderson, for a 48-14 score. Heick got a defensive rebound and West Liberty turned the ball over on a fast break. Tipton got an offensive rebound, then scored. Tipton got a defensive rebound, but traveled. The Comets were fouled on a shot, but both free throws were missed. Tipton grabbed the rebound.

With 4:34 on the clock, Becker scored in the paint. Tipton scored, then took a time out with 4:13 to go in the third quarter. Tipton scored again, cutting the West Liberty lead to 30. Miller drove to the basket and scored.

He was fouled but missed the free throw. Miller got a defensive rebound, and Becker was fouled on a shot. He made both free throws. The Comets missed another free throw, then Tipton missed a couple from the charity stripe. Smith got the rebound.

Koenig chased down a loose ball and Alpen scored the final basket of the quarter for a 56-20 score going into the last quarter.

Fourth Quarter

With the lead greater than 35, the continuous clock rule was in effect for the entire fourth quarter.

Becker got a steal and was fouled on a shot. He made both free throws for a 58-20 score with 6:12 to go.

Heick got a rebound, and Heick scored, assist Becker for a 60-20 score. The Cometsí starters left the game.

Tipton was fouled and missed both free throws. Koenig got the rebound. After a spate of turnovers, Tipton took a time out with 4:57 to go.

Tipton was fouled and made both free throws. Tipton took another time out at the 3:02 mark. Tipton drove to the basket and scored. Matt Kelly fouled, the Comets' ninth of the half. Tipton's extra point shot was good for a 60-25 score. The Tigers made a three-point shot. Koenig scored, assist JP Gomez. Gomez got a defensive rebound, then the Comets turned the ball over. The Tigers were fouled and made both free throws.

West Liberty was fouled and missed both free throws. Tipton got the rebound. The Tigers were fouled again and missed both free throws. Tyler Lyon got the board for the Comets. The final score was 62-30.
