The West Liberty volleyball team fell to West Branch at West Liberty Oct. 8 in four sets, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 18-25.

"I don't think we came out with a lot of intensity," West Liberty Head Coach Ruben Galvan said. "We were just flat. You've got to give credit to West Branch. They kept us flat. I don't really think we showed a lot of emotion to win this game. We didn't serve as tough as we wanted."

"Right now we can't focus on the fact that we're young. We're not young anymore. We're almost at the end of the season, and they need to step up and play like varsity players," he added.

Set 1

The Bears won the first set after jumping out to a big lead. Two net violations on the Comets made it 2-2, West Branch. The Bears hit the ball into the net then scored on a kill, two blocks, two aces, and another kill.

With the score 8-1, Bears, the Comets took a time out. Cassedi Simon scored a point for the Comets on a tap over the net, then the Bears built a bigger lead, scoring on two kills, three West Liberty errors, and a placement. A West Branch net violation made it 14-3. The teams traded points until a kill by Hailey Daufeldt and a West Branch carry call made it 17-7. The Comets went on a run, scoring on a double-hit call on the Bears, a West Branch error, a tap over by Kayla Kaalberg, and a hit out of bounds by the Bears. The score was 17-11, and the Bears called a time out.

The Comets continued to trail the entire round, finally the set point came on a kill by the Bears for a 25-22 final.

"We knew this was going to be a tough battle, and (West Liberty) did a super job defensively," West Branch Head Coach Josh Lukavsky said. "They didn't let any balls hit the floor. Even ones you probably thought were going to, they picked it up and got an attack on it and got us on our heels and really made us work for points."

Set 2

The Comets won the second set, even though the Bears started strong, building a 5-0 lead on a block, two kills, and two aces. A serving error made it 5-1, and the Comets called a time out. The Comets tied the set at 5-5, scoring on four West Branch errors.

A kill by Daufeldt gave West Liberty their first lead of the set. The Bears tied it at 6-6 with a kill. A hit out of bounds by West Liberty and a double hit by the Bears made it 7-7. The teams played to a 9-9 tie, then the Comets went on a run.

The final three points of the set were West Liberty's. Bridenstine got two kills, then the Bears hit the ball out of bounds for a 25-21 score.

Set 3

The third set was close, but the Bears surged ahead at the end for the win.

Merideth Nichols started the scoring with a kill, then the Bears got a kill. An ace by the Bears was followed by a block by Nichols for a 2-2 tie. The Bears hit the ball out of bounds, then Kaalberg got two consecutive kills for a 5-2 score.

The Bears got a kill, then Kaalberg got another kill. A carrying call on the Bears was followed by a serving error on the Comets. Another kill by Kaalberg made the score 8-4, Comets. A net serve and a hit out of bounds on the Comets was followed by a Bears ace, a four-hits call on the Comets, and a double-hit call on the Comets. The Bears had a 9-8 edge.

The Comets tied it at 9-9, then the Bears got a kill, followed by a kill by Bridenstine. A hit out of bounds by the Bears and a kill by the Bears made it 11-11.

Bridenstine got a kill, then the Bears got a kill. A West Branch error was followed by a point for the Bears on a tap over. The score was tied 13-13. The Bears scored a point, then the Comets scored on a West Branch error for a 14-14 tie.

Then the Bears scored four points on a kill, a tap over, a placement, and another kill. The Comets took a time out. A kill by Kaalberg made it 18-15, then the Bears scored on a hit out by West Liberty and a kill for a 20-15 tally.

The Comets scored two points on a Bears' net violation and a kill by Nichols. A West Branch kill, a West Liberty violation, and another West Branch kill made it 23-17. The Comets called a time out.

The Bears got another kill, then a West Branch net violation made it 24-18. Maddie Simon served an ace for the Comets for a 24-19 score. The final point of the set came on a kill by the Bears.

Set 4

West Branch took the fourth set and the match. A kill by the Bears was answered with a kill by Bridenstine. Another kill by the Bears was answered by a kill by Nichols for a 2-2 tie. The Bears scored two points on a West Liberty net violation and an ace. The Bears were in the net for a 4-3 score, advantage Bears.

A West Liberty net serve, a placement by Kaalberg, and a net violation by West Liberty made it 6-4, West Branch. The Bears served the ball into the net, then a tip and a kill by the Bears made it 8-5.

Bridenstine got a kill, then the Comets were called for a double hit. Daufeldt got a kill, then the Bears scored with a kill. Daufeldt got a kill on the line, then the Bears got a kill. A kill by Kaalberg and an ace by Daufeldt made it 11-10, Bears.

West Branch got a kill, then Kaalberg got a kill. The Bears scored the next three points on a net serve by the Comets, a kill, and a West Liberty error. Bridenstine got a kill, then the Bears had a net violation. A block by Nichols made it 15-14, West Branch.

West Branch scored three more points on a West Liberty violation and two West Liberty errors. Daufeldt got a kill for an 18-15 score, then West Branch scored the next five points on a West Liberty error, a kill, an ace, another kill, and another West Liberty error. The score was 23-15.

Daufeldt got a kill, then Kaalberg scored on a placement for a 23-17 score. A West Branch kill, a West Branch error, and a West Liberty serving error ended the set at 25-18 and the match at 3-1.

The first round of regional volleyball begins for the Comets against Mt. Vernon at Mt. Vernon high school. If they win they’ll play at Mt Vernon again Oct. 31 against an unknown opponent.
