The West Liberty Comets baseball team lost both games of a double header to 3A Marion June 11 at West Liberty. The first game’s score was 14-4, and it went seven innings. The second game lasted five innings and ended at 13-2.

“Marion’s a good team,” West Liberty Head Coach Troy Wulf said. “I’m proud of our kids. The effort was there.”

West Liberty stats: Brett Becker 1-4; Daniel Jacques 1 run, 3 walks; Tyler Newsom 2-4, 1 run; Chuy Garcia 1-3, 1 run, 1 RBI, 1 stolen base, 1 walk; Cooper Koenig 1-2, 1 RBI, 1 walk; Manny Lopez 1 run, 1 stolen base; Tanner Mueller 1-3; Dyllan Van Dusen 1-3, 1 RBI. Pitching: Cooper Koenig pitched four innings and took the loss. He gave up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits. He walked four. Tanner Mueller pitched three innings. He gave up seven runs, five earned, on three hits. He walked nine and struck out two.

Marion stats: Logan Fuller 2-4, 3 runs, 1 RBI, 1 stolen base; Christian Stekl 1-4, 2 runs, 1 walk; Trev Biery 2-2, 3 runs, 1 double, 1 homerun, 4 RBIs, 2 walks; Alex Charipar 2 runs, 3 walks; Gage Kray 1-2, 2 runs, 1 double, 2 RBIs; Trevor Hardman 1-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, 1 walk; Caleb Stekl 1-4, 2 RBIs; Logan Larsen 1-1, 1 run; Quinn Cannoy 1-3, 2 RBIs, 1 walk; John Carstenson 1 RBI. Pitching: Nick Connelly pitched 5 1/3 innings and got the win. He gave up four earned runs on six hits. He walked five and struck out five. Christian Steckl pitched 1 2/3 innings. He allowed one hit, striking out three.

Freshman Zach Courbat was the starting pitcher for the Comets in the second game, and he struggled. The first batter walked, then a double put runners at second and third. A run scored on a passed ball, then another walk was issued. A single scored a run for Marion, and a wild pitch allowed another runner to come home. A steal and a single put runners at the corners, the a double steal put runners at second and third. A fly out to first baseman Dyllan Van Dusen in foul territory gave the Comets their first out. Another runner stole home, then a single scored a run. A pop out to Brett Becker at second base was followed by a fly out to Tanner Mueller in right field to end the inning, but Marion was on top 6-0.

Daniel Jacques hit a one-out liner to the shortstop for a single. Tyler Newsom hit a double just fair down the right field line, and Jacques advanced to third. Chuy Garcia was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the next batter hit into a double play, and the inning was over.

Garcia came in to pitch in the second. Marion started with an infield single, the two walks loaded the bases. Two more walks scored two runs. A fly out to Jacques in center field scored a run. The next batter popped out to Newsom at short, then a pop out to Becker at second base ended the top of the second.

The Comets went quietly in the second with three groundouts.

Marion scored one run in the top of the third. The first batter grounded out to Newsom. The next batter walked then scored on a double to left field. A groundout to Newsom and a strikeout brought up the Comets’ third.

The Comets scored their two runs in the bottom of the third. Courbat led off with a base on balls, and he stole second. Becker hit a double to center field, and Courbat scored. Jacques hit a sacrifice fly. Becker tagged and moved to third. Newsom was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Garcia hit a single to center field, and Becker scored. The next batter hit into a double play to end the inning.

Garcia got a strike out and a fly out to start the top of the fourth. The next batter walked, but Newsom fielded the next ball put in play and fired it to first for the out.

The Comets were retired in order in the fourth.

Jacques came in to pitch for the Comets in the fifth. The first two batters singled, then Jacques got a strikeout. A double to right field scored two runs, then a single put runners at first and second. Jacques got another strikeout, the a single to right field scored another run. Another strikeout ended any additional threat, but the damage was done.

The Comets needed two runs to keep the game going, but they came up empty. The first batter worked the count full before striking out. The next batter popped out in foul territory to the third baseman. Jacques drew a base on balls, but he was left stranded when the next batter struck out.

West Liberty 1, Regina 7 - June 10 at ReginaThe Comets scored one in the seventh and fell to Regina on the road. Zach Courbat scored the run, and Brett Becker had a double.

Pitching: Raso Payton pitched 6 2/3 innings and got the win. He gave up one earned run on seven hits.



Liberty 1,4, Regina 11, 10 June 13 at West Liberty

The Comets were 10-runned in six innings in the first game and lost the nightcap as well at West Liberty.
