Comet baseball picks up two wins at Tipton
by Lindsay Hoeppner · July 01, 2010

The road was kind to the West Liberty High School baseball team last week.

Although the Comets were rained out against Lone Tree on Wednesday, June 23, the baseball squad was able to capitalize on a doubleheader at Tipton Thursday, June 24, beating the Tigers 7-0 and 6-0, respectively.

“It’s been awhile since we won, so it was good for the kids. They played well,” said West Liberty coach Troy Wulf. “We played good baseball.”

Sophomore Avery Meyers pitched game one and struck out 13 Tipton hitters. Senior Ryne Paul pitched game two and struck out six Tigers.

“Ryne only gave up two hits after the first inning, so he really settled in and did a nice job,” Wulf said.

With the two wins against Tipton, the Comets were looking for some fresh opponents heading into the Wapello Tournament on Saturday, however, the game was postponed.

As a result, West Liberty was looking to extend its winning streak Monday, June 28 against Durant, however the Comets fell 5-4.

West Liberty had a 4-1 lead going into the seventh inning. Then, disaster struck.

Meyers walked the first two Durant players in the seventh, got an out, gave up a triple and struck out a Wildcat hitter, but a West Liberty error in the outfield led to four runs scored by Durant.

“We played six really clean innings and then our walks and errors came back,” Wulf said. “We gave up a big inning and couldn’t recover.”

The Comets, however, will look to redeem themselves as they again take on Durant in a doubleheader today (Thursday, July 1), host West Branch tomorrow (Friday, July 2) and take on North Cedar on Monday, July 5.

“Right now, we’re just trying to do whatever we can to find ways to win,” Wulf said. “That’s our goal.”
