Rudy Giuliani, Republican, Mayor - New York City by Sara Sedlacek · January 02, 2008 Rudy Giuliani was born in Brooklyn, New York.
He attended Manhattan College and earned his law degree from New York University. After graduation, he joined the office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, later becoming the Chief of the Narcotics Unit.
Giuliani was appointed the Associate Deputy Attorney General, later becoming the Chief of Staff to the Deputy Attorney General. He was named the Associate Attorney General under Ronald Reagan and, in 1983, became the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Giuliani was elected the mayor of New York City in 1993. He was re-elected in 1997 with 57 percent of the vote. As mayor of New York City, Giuliani reduced crime by 56 percent and murder by 66 percent, making New York City the safest big city in the country. He also reduced welfare rolls by nearly 60 percent.
Supporting Giuliani in West Liberty is retired educator, Ken Donnelly.
“Rudy Giuliani was the 107th mayor of New York City and I would like to see him become the 44th president.
“I do see him as a powerful leader in a time of crisis. He’ll keep America on the offense in the War on Terror. He will increase the size and strength of our military by creating 10 new Army combat brigades. Islamic jihadists will likely hit us again and when it happens I want this man in charge.
“He’ll reform the legal system and appoint strict constructionist judges to the federal courts, including the Supreme Court; judges like Roberts, Scalia and Aledo. Activist judges expand the courts beyond the Constitution; they shouldn’t be legislating from the bench.
“Giuliani can win. He has a proven track record of gaining Independent and Democratic voters, which is vital for a Republican to win. He won the election as mayor of New York City in 1993 and 1997 despite the a huge number of Democratic voters. In 1993, he won by 50,000 votes over the incumbent. In 1997, he ran against a Democratic woman who ran the borough of Manhattan with 57 percent of the vote.
“As far as taxation goes he will propose legislation to simplify the tax system. He wants to eliminate the Death Tax. He wants to protect family farms and businesses. As president, Giuliani will seek a 10 percent spending reduction in all government agencies, except the military.
“As for the border, he would secure the border with a physical and technological fence. He would require tamper-proof ID cards for all non-citizens coming into the U.S. and track their entry and exit. Under Giuliani, New York City was a sanctuary city. He was criticized for embracing illegal immigrants. He said he wanted New York to be a sanctuary city so that illegal immigrants could send their children to school and report crimes without the fear of deportation.
“Giuliani will also provide access to quality education by giving real school choice. He started the Charter School Initiative which gives an alternative to public schools. New York City has the largest school system in the country. Education is the civil rights issue of our day because minorities in many areas aren’t getting a quality education. Giuliani favors vouchers to get kids to charter or religious schools.
“I’ve met my candidate and I’m confident he will make a good president.”
